Sanlé Sory: In Fine Style
Sanlé Sory: In Fine Style is a collection of mainly unseen colour and monochrome studio portraiture, ranging from the early-1970s through to the mid-2000s, the last years of monsieur Sory's Volta Photo studio.
The exhibition runs concurrently with Sanlé Sory: Colour Years at The Photographers’ Gallery, the first show dedicated to the artist’s colour work, and coincides with two new photobooks: Sanlé Sory, by Phaidon, which is a major career overview published in both English and French, and Volta Colour, published by GOST Books, which accompanies the show at The Photographers’ Gallery.
In 2017, Volta Photo at David Hill Gallery was the first gallery exhibition of Sanlé Sory’s work and achieved international acclaim for the artist. This led to Volta Photo: Starring Sanlé Sory and the People of Bobo-Dioulasso at Art Institute of Chicago in 2018, the first solo museum show of an African photographer’s work in the United States. Sanlé Sory’s photographs are held in the permanent collections of the V&A, MoMA, Minneapolis Institute of Art, and North Carolina Museum of Art, among others.
